Where is
the highest paved road
in Europe ? I would have
guessed the Alps, and I
still think it could be
a reasonable answer. But
it is not so. The
Pyrenees ? No - but
closer. Not so far south
of there is the original
Sierra Nevada. The road
to Pico Veleta reaches
over 3000 meters. On a
road bike it is an out
and back ride, but with
a mountain bike you can
go down the other side.
The majority of summits
above 2000 meters in
Spain are in these
southern ranges. But I
think my favorites are
many of the smaller
roads that climb to
remote villages in
Andalucia, Murcia and
surrounding provinces.
