US89 summit: Thistle Jct - Fairview

One look at the profile and it is obvious that this is not a major mountain pass. However it does meet the criteria outlined in the introduction for inclusion in these pages. The summit is marked with a pass symbol on at least one map, in this case Touraide maps, which used to be distributed in gas stations. Besides, it is a very nice bike ride, even if your low gears are worn out. Almost anywhere you turn off from this road, you encounter a steeper grade, especially heading up the Wasatch Plateau from Fairview.

Approaches

From North. The barely discernible grade from Thistle Jct follows Thistle Creek, located between the mighty wall of the Wasatch Range to the west and the Wasatch Plateau on the east. The road has very little traffic, great scenery, and most importantly - no rumble strips as of yet, May/05.

From South. The approach is described in a downward direction. The descend ahead is a straight line, pleasantly deflating the altitude by 500 feet to the appropriately named town of Fairview( 3rd picture), backed by the Wasatch Plateau. From there Fairview Canyon climbs up the plateau. But after a slight uphill this long gentle road descends the San Pete Valley further through Mount Pleasant and Spring City..

Tours

Dayrides. This profile is part of a scenically impressive circular ride over the much higher Ut264 summit(u) Scofield - jctUt31. Such a ride, starting near Thistle Jct, continuing over this summit, heading up Fairview Canyon to the Ut264 summit(u): Scofield -jctUt31, returning through Scofield and the western descent of Soldier Summit measured 107 miles with 6130 feet of climbing over 8.0 hours.
